What is a Sankey diagram?

A Sankey diagram shows flows between stages. Each link is drawn with a width proportional to its value, so the largest flows stand out at a glance. It is a common way to show where money goes, from income to spending and savings, and also to map energy use, website traffic or material flows, where a table of numbers is harder to read.

This maker starts from a budget template with typical income and spending categories and the currency for your country, or from a blank custom diagram. You add nodes, connect them with links and give each link a value. Six color themes are included, and you can export the result as PNG or SVG. The diagram is drawn in your browser.

Sankey diagram FAQ

How do I make a budget Sankey diagram?
Choose the Budget template and select your country. The diagram starts with income such as salary flowing into categories like housing, food, taxes and savings. Edit each link's value to match your own numbers, rename or delete nodes you do not need, and add new ones. Keep total outflows equal to your income so the diagram balances.
Can I export the diagram as PNG or SVG?
Yes. Export as PNG gives an image for documents, slides and messages. Export as SVG gives a vector file that stays sharp at any size and can be edited in design tools such as Figma, Illustrator or Inkscape. Both files are created in your browser and saved straight to your device.
What is the difference between a Sankey diagram and a flow chart?
A flow chart shows the steps and decisions in a process, and its arrows have no size. A Sankey diagram shows quantities: each link's width is proportional to the amount flowing through it. Use a flow chart to explain how something works, and a Sankey diagram to show how much goes where.
Is my budget data uploaded or saved?
No. The diagram and every value you enter stay in this browser tab and are never uploaded. The tool does not save your work either, so export a PNG or SVG before you close or reload the page if you want to keep it.
